Review Scoring Policy
Last updated: June 11, 2025
At Game Friend, we use a 10-point scoring system for our reviews of games, gaming hardware, accessories, and digital experiences. Our reviews are written by passionate community members and experienced contributors who aim to guide you with honest, thoughtful, and well-balanced feedback.
We believe reviews are more than just numbers - but we also recognise that scores help readers make quick, informed decisions. That’s why our reviews combine clear scoring with transparent reasoning.
What We Score
We only assign scores to full releases of games or products.
Games still in early access or beta stages will either receive:
- A hands-on preview
- An unscored “review-in-progress”
In the case of review-in-progress articles, the content may evolve as the game develops - but we aim to preserve the original impressions for transparency and archival purposes.
Review Philosophy
Each review represents the opinion of the individual reviewer, not Game Friend as a whole. Our writers are encouraged to speak honestly, even if their views challenge wider consensus.
You may not always agree with a review - and that’s okay. We only ask that you consider the arguments made, not just the score.
If a game receives significant post-launch updates, we may revisit and re-review it as a separate article. Likewise, new versions or ports may receive distinct reviews, clearly marked to avoid confusion.
Review Score Breakdown
1 - Unplayable
Broken, offensive, or deeply flawed with no redeeming qualities. Often riddled with game-breaking bugs or design failures. Avoid entirely.
2 - Fundamentally Flawed
Slightly more functional than a 1, but still an overwhelmingly negative experience. Maybe one or two small merits - but not worth your time.
3 - Poor
A disappointing or frustrating experience that lacks polish or engagement, with only minimal positive moments.
4 - Below Average
Some good ideas or features, but the execution is poor. Might appeal to die-hard fans of a niche, but most should steer clear.
5 - Average
A mixed bag. Equal parts good and bad. May still be enjoyable depending on your preferences, but doesn’t stand out.
6 - Okay
A solid experience with a few flaws. Not outstanding, but it can be fun if you’re willing to overlook some shortcomings.
7 - Good
An enjoyable game overall, despite a few issues. Offers value and entertainment with room for improvement.
8 - Great
Highly recommended. Strong across most areas, though not quite an all-timer. A safe bet for most players.
9 - Excellent
A must-play in its category. Whether it's an unforgettable story or innovative mechanics, this game leaves a lasting impression.
10 - Outstanding
Rarely awarded. A top-tier experience that goes above and beyond expectations. Not "perfect" (no game is), but an unforgettable achievement in its genre.
